Dry Eye or Eye Allergies? Understanding the Difference

Dry eye and eye allergies can cause similar symptoms, including redness, watering, and irritation. However, the underlying causes—and the treatments—are different.

Common Dry Eye Symptoms

Dry eye may cause:

  • Burning or stinging

  • Gritty or sandy sensations

  • Fluctuating vision

  • Eye fatigue

  • Redness

  • Excessive tearing

Common Allergy Symptoms

Eye allergies often cause:

  • Intense itching

  • Redness

  • Watery eyes

  • Swelling

  • Burning or irritation

Itching is particularly common with allergies and may help distinguish them from dry eye.

However, it is possible to have both dry eye and allergies, which can make symptoms more difficult to identify.

If your symptoms are persistent, an eye examination can help determine what is causing your discomfort and which treatment options may be appropriate. Don't assume you simply have allergies or dry eyes. If symptoms continue, schedule an eye exam.
